Google maps is an awesome resource when traveling as you can just type an address in and see what is around it. You can also just type in the airport code and then get directions to your hotel by car, walking or public transportation. Start at http://maps.google.com.

Check if the water is drinkable

The water from the tap in some countries is sometimes not for drinking. Always ask your hotel when you check-in or you can ask at the airport information counter.

Fill out Immigration and Customs forms properly

Ensure that you fill out Immigration and applicable Customs forms properly. This will ensure that you have no issues when entering foreign countries. The key items are knowing where you are staying and when you are leaving. Some countries such as the U.S. have elaborate forms while others such as the Netherlands does not require any paperwork.
